TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff Relax has become the first cruise ship to receive a ship-to-ship bioLNG supply at the Port of Barcelona.
The bunkering took place on July 26. The Haugesund Knutsen barge, operated by Knutsen Scale Gas and chartered by Shell, delivered 1,875 m³ of bioLNG. The fuel came from Enagás’ regasification plant at the port.
This was the port’s first ship-to-ship bioLNG operation. Also, it marks a key step toward low-emission cruising.
BioLNG is made from organic waste. It’s a renewable fuel that can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 100%, depending on the feedstock. It behaves the same as fossil LNG, so ships already using LNG don’t need modifications.
The Mein Schiff Relax is LNG-powered and fully equipped for alternative fuels. The fast ship-to-ship supply allowed more than 15 times the volume compared to earlier truck deliveries.

Barcelona is a growing hub for LNG bunkering. In 2024, 23% of cruise calls used LNG. Switching to bioLNG boosts the port’s efforts to decarbonize maritime transport.
For TUI Cruises, this is part of a bigger goal. The company plans to be climate-neutral by 2050. Its strategy includes green fuels, shore power, efficient routes, and cleaner technology.
Additionally, the Mein Schiff Relax is the first InTUItion-class vessel. It runs almost entirely on LNG. Future ships, like Mein Schiff 7, will also be ready for green methanol.
Moreover, this operation was local from start to finish. The fuel was produced, certified, and delivered entirely within the port. The Enagás terminal is certified by ISCC EU and the European Commission, ensuring full sustainability and traceability.
