Manila Reaches Out to Beijing; Can Dialogue Dampen South China Sea Tensions?

As tensions in the South China Sea reach one of their most volatile points in recent history, the Philippines has made a bold overture as it remains open to additional agreements with Beijing to preserve peace, according to its top diplomat.



The statement comes amid repeated maritime confrontations, the latest involving a water cannon attack and a direct collision between Chinese and Philippine vessels near Second Thomas Shoal.
