MAN Energy Solutions to deliver world’s most powerful methanol-fueled two-stroke engine in 2025

MAN Energy Solutions has announced the upcoming delivery of the world’s most powerful two-stroke methanol engine, scheduled for June 2025.

The engine, an MAN B&W 12G95ME-C10.5-LGIM model, is rated at 82,440 kW at 80 rpm and is currently under construction by Chinese licensee CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd.

This groundbreaking engine is the first of 12 units destined for a series of 24,000 TEU container vessels.

Seven of the ships are being built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. for Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd., and the remaining five by Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd. Each engine will also be equipped with MAN’s proprietary EGRTC emissions system.

Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, commented that methanol holds great promise as a clean marine fuel, and this achievement brings us one step closer to zero-emission shipping.

Christian Ludwig, Head of Two-Stroke Sales and Promotion at MAN Energy Solutions, added that when fueled by green methanol, these engines can even achieve carbon-neutral operation, making them a cornerstone of shipping’s sustainable future.
