Major container lines post weakest results since 2023

Regressing freight rates have seen liner operators post their poorest showing since the last quarter of 2023, and carriers are expecting to be in the red in 4Q 2025, with the peak season ending prematurely.

Alphaliner said in its report that the nine largest carriers logged an average 9.9% operating margin for Q2 2025, the worst result since 4Q 2023.

Many shipping lines posted operating losses in a fast declining post-COVID market in 4Q 2023, which was then abruptly reversed by the emergence of the Red Sea crisis.
