Maersk’s new service to connect West Africa with Far East

Earlier in May, Maersk has launched a new weekly service, called Far East West Africa India Express service (FEW3), connecting West Africa with Far East ports through the Cochin Port.

The Danish container line has decided to deploy 13 vessels of 4,500-5,500TEU capacity on the new service, which started with the maiden call of the 4,532TEU boxship Kmarin Azur on 7 May.

DP World, which operates International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Cochin Port, believes this service will boost cashew, raw cotton and timber trade from Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India.

“With this new service, customers can connect their cargo directly from Cochin to global markets instead of transhipping at Colombo Port thereby, providing overall cost advantage by reducing the transit time by 7-10 days,” said DP World.
