Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have issued updates following a security incident involving drone activity and reported explosions at the Port of Salalah in Oman in the early hours of 28 March 2026.
Both carriers confirmed that operations at the port have been temporarily suspended, with local authorities and port management assessing the situation after a terminal crane was damaged and a port worker sustained minor injuries. The facility was evacuated as a precaution.
Maersk stated that all its crew members are safe and accounted for, and that no vessels or cargo have been affected. The company estimates that port operations could remain on hold for approximately 48 hours, subject to change.
Hapag-Lloyd also confirmed the safety of its crew and reported no damage to its vessel Lisbon Express. As a precautionary measure, the vessel was moved out of the port following the incident.
Both carriers warned that the disruption may lead to delays in vessel schedules and cargo handling.
They added that they are closely monitoring developments and remain in contact with port authorities, with further updates to be provided as the situation evolves.
