Maersk to support Hong Kong’s decarbonisation strategy

Maersk will join the Low Carbon Charter, launched by Hong Kong Business Environment Council (BEC), with the vision to contribute to the country’s long-term decarbonisation process.

Head of Legal of Maersk Asia Pacific, Daan Slotema who received the certificate on behalf of the company stated that Maersk is intensifying its efforts to achieve the ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and support customers to decarbonise their supply chains.

Indeed, Maersk has recently ordered eight Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV) capable of being operated on carbon-neutral methanol, as a part of its efforts to decarbonise marine operations, with the first vessel to be introduced in the first quarter of 2024.

“International shipping contributes over 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and the International Maritime Organization recently adopted a strategy to decarbonise the sector,” pointed out CEO of Business Environment Council, Adam Koo, who went on to add that “BEC welcomes the opportunity to work with Maersk and the shipping industry and leverage the Charter as a platform to inspire the wider business community in Hong Kong to accelerate their climate action.”

The BEC Low Carbon Charter was launched in March 2019 with the support of business leaders and the Environment Bureau to mobilise companies in the property and construction value chain to contribute towards Hong Kong’s long-term decarbonisation through their pledge to set and achieve carbon reduction targets.
