Maersk has announced a new operational process under which the company will take responsibility for managing the destruction of import, export and transshipment cargo in Spain.
The initiative is aimed at improving supply chain efficiency while simplifying procedures for customers requiring the disposal of goods.
Under the new arrangement, Maersk will oversee the destruction process in accordance with all applicable technical, environmental and safety regulations. The company said the procedure will ensure proper handling, certified destruction and compliant disposal of cargo.
The implementation will take place in two phases. For non-FMC regulated countries, the process will apply to cargo with a planned cargo destruction date (PCD) from 15 March 2026. For FMC regulated countries, the measure will come into effect for cargo with a PCD from 15 April 2026.
According to Maersk, the cost of cargo destruction will vary depending on several factors, including the type of product, the quantity involved, as well as the weight and condition of the goods.
The company noted that the updated process is expected to strengthen control and traceability throughout the destruction procedure. In addition, it aims to improve operational planning and reduce equipment idle time within the logistics chain.
