Maersk to adjust emergency contingency surcharge

Maersk has announced changes to its Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) applicable to cargo moving from the Middle East Gulf and the Indian Subcontinent to Latin America.

The adjustment affects multiple trade lanes under the B1S and X5ML services, including shipments from North West India and Pakistan, South and East India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, as well as the Middle East Gulf, to destinations across the East and West Coasts of South America, the Caribbean and Central America.

According to the liner operator, the revised surcharge levels will reflect a decrease, effective from the Price Calculation Date (PCD) of 1 January 2026. Updated ECS details have been published in Maersk’s surcharge table and reflected on the company’s Rate Announcements page.

Maersk noted that all surcharge changes remain subject to applicable regulatory approvals and mandatory notice periods. Once implemented, the updated ECS will be reflected on customers’ invoices.

Maersk said the ECS will apply uniformly across container types. The rates are applicable to all OOG, SOC and NOR containers, with 40-foot flat rack, open-top and NOR units charged at the same rate as 40-foot dry containers.
