Maersk has announced the suspension of the 40-foot Pick Up Charge (PIC) for cargo in Johannesburg, South Africa, effective from 31 January 2026 until further notice.
The suspension applies to both dry and reefer containers. The Pick Up Charge is normally applied when a container is collected from a non-preferred pick-up location, defined as a location other than the first container yard listed on the bill of lading or the preferred default pick-up location stated on the export haulage release order.
Under the suspended charges, the PIC for a 40-foot dry container in Johannesburg was previously set at ZAR 5,000, while the charge for a 40-foot reefer container was ZAR 7,500.
Maersk noted that for non-spot bookings, pricing is determined based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD). For non-FMC trades, the PCD refers to the scheduled departure date of the first water leg at the time of booking confirmation, while for FMC trades it is the last container gate-in date. For spot bookings, the price calculation date corresponds to the booking date.
The company said the suspension is intended to support customers and improve flexibility in container pick-up arrangements in the Johannesburg market.
