Maersk starts reefer train service in Spain

Maersk has announced the launch of a new weekly rail service for reefer cargo, connecting the Port of Algeciras in Cadiz with Marin Port in Galicia.

With a transit time of 1 day and 12 hours, the new rail service departs from the Port of Algeciras in Cadiz and arrives at the Port of Marin every Friday at midday.

“This new train service facilitates cargo delivery to Galicia ahead of schedule, allowing for weekend deliveries and distribution to final retailers,” said Diego Perdones Montero, Maersk managing director for South West Europe and the Maghreb.

Furthermore, the new service helps to reduce environmental effects, which is a hot topic among many customers committed to reducing CO2 emissions, according to Montero.

The new intra-Spain rail service for reefer containers aligns with Maersk’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions for all its activities by 2040, helping this way customers fulfill theirs environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies.

“One of the primary benefits of this new service for us is the ability to carry our reefer cargo through rail for the first time,” noted representatives from Grupo Ibérica de Congelados.

The Danish logistics company is launching this new service with a weekly call from Wednesday to Friday, with the expectation to scale the service up in response to the rising demand for environmentally friendly transportation modes.

For the implementation of this project, Maersk has coordinated with Algeciras port authority, Marin port authority, Ria de Pontevedra, Marin Container Terminal, Temarin -Grupo Pérez Torres and the health ministry regulations.
