Danish liner operator Maersk Line has begun to roll out its new line in cargo insurance, offered in collaboration with Zurich Insurance Plc (Zurich) starting with Spain and with the hope of including the rest of Europe later this year, a company spokeswoman told Container News.
Maersk Cargo Insurance (MCI) was launched 16 March and is available to insure virtually all types of cargo, including reefer cargo and special products, said the company.
Following requests from a number of shippers Maersk said it had developed the product to allow customers a one-stop-shop when booking end-to-end cargo rather than having to make a number of calls to manage the shipment process.
With MCI shippers have the option of deciding whether to agree to MCI when they book cargo. Cargo owners can elect to include insurance with every shipment upfront, which means they can settle, “all bills in one place,” with the MCI premium included in the regular Maersk freight invoice.
“The launch of Maersk Cargo Insurance in Spain marks the first step in offering a cargo Insurance product globally and having a variety of solutions based on our customers’ interests. We look forward to successfully roll out the product across other countries in Europe throughout 2020,” said Maia Parlagashvili, Global Insurance Product Manager.
The further roll-out of MCI, beyond Europe will depend on the situation with Coronavirus, added the company.
