Maersk Edmonton marks debut call at Sri Lanka’s East Container Terminal

On 5 April 2024, Maersk Edmonton, a vessel operating within West Africa Xpress Service (WAX Service) of Maersk and CMA CGM, made its inaugural call at the East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

This milestone marks Maersk’s first visit to the ECT but also signifies the beginning of a promising partnership between the Danish container giant and SLPA.

The launch of this new service was initiated by CMA CGM Sri Lanka and was formally established during a delegation visit to Maersk Lines and CMA CGM in Dubai, led by Keith D. Bernard, chairman of SLPA. The purpose of the visit was to discuss strategies for attracting more vessels to the Port of Colombo.

This collaborative effort has significantly contributed to the anticipated success of Maersk’s deployment of the WAX Service to Colombo, promising growth and prosperity for both parties.

The container vessel Maersk Edmonton, constructed in 2011 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, currently sails under the flag of Denmark. With an overall length (LOA) of 366 meters, it can carry 13,100 TEUs and has a gross tonnage of 141,716 tons.

Currently, CMA CGM deploys 13 vessels on the WAX Service, with Maersk Line contributing eight boxships.
