Maersk opens new cold store facility in Rotterdam

As demand for temperature-sensitive logistics continues to rise, driven by fresh fruits, proteins, and pharmaceuticals, Maersk is strengthening its global cold chain infrastructure.

The latest addition to its network of owned and leased cold storage facilities is a cutting-edge warehouse in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“Our cold store significantly improves the speed and reliability in refrigerated supply chains, and hence the quality of temperature sensitive and frozen products on their way to European consumers,” stated Ole Trumpfheller, Managing Director of Maersk Area North Europe Continent.

Furthermore, in less than 18 months since breaking ground, Maersk has successfully launched operations at the new facility, welcoming its first shipment of fresh grapes from South African exporter Grape Alliance.

Spanning 35,000 square meters, the warehouse is strategically positioned next to Maasvlakte II—one of Europe’s most advanced terminals, operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals.

With a storage capacity exceeding 34,000 pallet positions, the facility is set to become a critical hub for Maersk’s reefer and cold chain logistics in North-West Europe, serving key industries such as pharmaceuticals, fruit, meat, and seafood.

Additionally, the adjacent, newly expanded Star Depot enables customers to return empty reefer containers directly, minimizing extra detention and demurrage (D&D) costs.

To offer fresh produce customers a closer look at its capabilities, Maersk will showcase a 3D model and virtual reality tour of the warehouse at the Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin ( 5 – 7 February 2025) at booth H-41 in hall 26.

Key Features of the Rotterdam Cold Storage Facility:

  • Customs-bonded warehouse for seamless import/export processing
  • In-house veterinary inspection point to facilitate regulatory compliance
  • Sustainable, low-emission operations with BREEAM Excellent certification and renewable energy integration
