Container vessel Maersk Batur suffered engine failure in the afternoon of 29 January 2020, while it was sailing in the Gibraltar Strait.
The 2009-built boxship had left Port of Algeciras in Spain and was en route to Newark in the US. The officials of the 3,100 TEU vessel informed local authorities of the vessel’s main engine failure.
The Nautical department sailed to the vessel’s assistance and towed it back to the Spanish port in order to start inspections and repairs, according to Maersk.
The Port of Algeciras Authority confirmed to Container News that Maersk Batur had arrived safely in Algeciras.
Maersk, responding to CN request, stated:
“We can confirm that Maersk Batur experienced problems with the main engine on Wednesday 29 when sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar en route from Algeciras to Newark. The crew reacted rapidly, stopping the main engine to prevent any further damage and the vessel was safely moored alongside at the lay by berth in Algeciras with the assistance of a tug.
“We are currently investigating the root cause of the failure and carrying out necessary repairs. Customers have been informed and we are working to minimise any potential delay to their cargo.”
The Danish shipping company says that based on the latest information received and as a result of this incident, the vessel is expected to be delayed and a contingency plan is being worked on.
