Maersk announces new flexitank removal service at Spanish ports

Maersk Spanish ports

Maersk has updated its policy for import containers equipped with flexitanks at three major Spanish ports. Starting today, the carrier will manage the removal of these tanks in Valencia, Barcelona, and Algeciras. This change aims to simplify the supply chain while ensuring strict safety and environmental standards.

The company will handle all destruction and recycling processes for the removed materials. Consequently, this centralized approach helps ensure full compliance with technical requirements. Maersk will apply a flat fee of 695 EUR per container for this specific service.

The new policy follows a staggered rollout schedule based on regional regulations. For non-regulated countries, the charge becomes effective today, February 18, 2026. Furthermore, the rule applies to Vietnam on March 5, 2026. Finally, regulated countries will see this change take effect on March 21, 2026.

This modification intends to create more agile and efficient operations at the port terminals. Specifically, Maersk expects the service to reduce equipment waiting times for its customers. By optimizing these transport flows, the company also aims to lower the carbon footprint of these logistics activities.

Therefore, shippers no longer need to coordinate independent removal services at these locations. This shift provides a more integrated solution for liquid bulk cargo moving through Spain.
