A.P. Moller – Maersk and Amazon have finalised a 2023-2024 agreement for the transport of 20,000 FFE containers using green biofuel through Maersk’s “ECO Delivery” ocean product offering.
Maersk believes this purchase will contribute to a reduction in 44,600 metric tons of CO2e vs standard bunker fuel, roughly equivalent to 50 million pounds of coal burned.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the two companies have arranged container shipping using low-GHG fuel options.
The firm defines ‘green fuels’ as fuels that emit low to very low GHG emissions across their life cycle as compared to fossil fuels. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) has certified Maersk green fuels and its supply chain. The accounting approach is based on the GLEC (Global Logistics Emissions Council) and is certified by Smart Freight Center.
According to a statement, customers benefit from immediate and independently validated GHG savings with the ECO Delivery biofuel option, without the need for compensating measures like offsetting.
This year, Amazon will benefit from a new ECO Delivery product feature that will permit the use of green methanol in addition to biodiesel as a second green fuel in the vessel fleet.
In this way, ECO Delivery uses primary data for fuel usage to report emissions savings with better precision, including additional greenhouse gases in addition to CO2.
The new model also offers pricing certainty and stability, and it is not dependent on the fossil fuel market.
“We share a common goal with Amazon to reduce our total GHG emissions to net zero by 2040,” stated Narin Phol, president at A.P. Moller-Maersk in North America.
