MACS, Stinnes merge to expand transatlantic services

MACS Maritime Carrier Shipping and Hugo Stinnes Schiffahrt have officially merged, forming one of the largest multipurpose liner shipping operators on the Atlantic.

The new entity will continue under the name MACS Maritime Carrier Shipping GmbH & Co. and operate a combined fleet of more than 15 vessels. Also, the network will cover over 20 ports in 16 countries, with the headquarters remaining in Hamburg.

The merger brings together two well-established players in the MPP liner space. Together, they aim to enhance service reliability, expand logistics capabilities, and strengthen their focus on environmental efficiency.

“This is a major step forward,” said Dietrich Scheder-Bieschin, Managing Director at MACS. “We’re combining shared values and a clear commitment to sustainability and safety.”

Moreover, MACS will legally succeed Hugo Stinnes Schiffahrt, assuming all contracts and obligations without disruption. Customers and partners are not required to take any action, and all existing agreements will remain valid.

Additionally, the Stinnes office in Rostock will close by the end of 2025. From January 1, 2026, former Stinnes staff will operate out of MACS’ Hamburg office. Key contacts in operations, line management, accounting, and IT will remain unchanged.

Lastly, the well-known SANMEX service connecting North Europe with the US Gulf and Mexico will be renamed the Stinnes Service, preserving the 200-year-old brand under the new setup.
