Lufthansa Cargo adopts IoT tracking

Lufthansa Cargo has become the launch customer for a new IoT-based unit load device tracking solution developed by Jettainer, with implementation already underway across the full ULD fleet.

The announcement was made at the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2026 in Lima, Peru, and represents a further development in a longstanding partnership between the two companies.

Jettainer currently manages the comprehensive ULD operations for Lufthansa Cargo, encompassing global positioning, steering, maintenance and repair of one of the largest dedicated ULD fleets in worldwide cargo and passenger aviation.

The new tracking system extends this management framework by introducing real-time visibility of ULD movements across the entire international network.

A distinguishing feature of the solution is its hybrid infrastructure approach. Rather than relying exclusively on fixed airport readers, the system combines stationary and mobile reading devices to ensure continuous tracking coverage, including at locations with limited technical infrastructure.

This configuration substantially reduces blind spots and delivers reliable transparency throughout the ULD supply chain, providing airlines with precise data on the location and dwell time of individual units.

The operational benefits of the system are concentrated in three areas: faster identification and response to irregularities, more efficient recovery of misplaced equipment, and improved data-driven positioning and fleet steering.

Together these capabilities are expected to raise overall fleet performance and reduce the operational overhead associated with ULD searches and repositioning.

Oliver von Götz, VP Global Fulfillment Management at Lufthansa Cargo, described digital transparency as a critical success factor in contemporary air cargo operations and framed the IoT rollout as a direct contribution to improved reliability and service quality for the carrier’s customers worldwide.
