LR grants AiP to KNCC’s elevated pressure LCO₂ cargo system

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC) for its Elevated Pressure Liquefied Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂-EP) cargo containment system. The AiP was presented at Gastech 2025 in Milan.

The system is designed to transport LCO₂ at elevated pressures, reducing the need for ultra-low temperatures. This simplifies containment requirements and gives shipowners more flexibility in vessel design.

LR reviewed the design as part of a joint development project, providing technical guidance to refine the system ahead of commercial deployment.

“Granting AiP to KNCC’s Elevated Pressure system recognises it as a safe and practical technology,” said Panos Mitrou, LR’s Global Gas Segment Director. “It supports the maritime LCO₂ sector and helps scale the carbon dioxide value chain.”

Oliver Hagen-Smith, CEO of KNCC, called the AiP a “landmark achievement” that reinforces the company’s leadership in safe, sustainable, and scalable carbon transport solutions.
