LNG power lauded in Singapore bunker op’s

CMA CGM has carried out the first ship-to-ship bunkering operation in Asia with the FueLNG Bellina, Singapore’s first LNG bunkering vessel, refuelling the LNG powered CMA CGM Scandola at the port of Singapore.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The French carrier said the vessel refuelling was a milestone on two counts with the successful operation also being the first time that cargo handling operations have continued simultaneously as LNG bunkering operations were undertaken.

FueLNG, a joint venture between Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, Shell Eastern Petroleum, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), loaded the 15,052TEU CMA CGM Scandola with 7,100m3 of LNG from FueLNG Bellina, Singapore’s first LNG bunkering vessel.

Scandola was built in South Korea’s Hyundai Samho shipyard and was delivered in December last year.

The ship is the “First of six new 15,000TEU LNG-powered containerships which CMA CGM Group has lined-up to be bunkered in Singapore this year. These ships will be deployed on CMA CGM’s MEX 1 service between Asia and the Mediterranean,” said the carrier.

Present at the bunkering operation was Singapore’s senior minister of state for transport and foreign affairs, Mr Chee Hong Tat, who said, “As the shipping industry explores alternative zero-carbon fuels, LNG is a viable transitional fuel. As a global bunkering hub, we are pleased to partner CMA CGM, FueLNG, Keppel Offshore & Marine and Shell Eastern Petroleum, to provide more sustainable bunkering solutions for the shipping industry.”
