A Comoros-flagged livestock vessel came under fire Thursday in the Red Sea, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey, as reported by Reuters.
The attackers, reportedly in a wooden boat, opened fire near the Hanish Islands—around 30 nautical miles northwest of Yemen’s Mocha port. The vessel had been sailing from Bosaso, Somalia, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Ambrey said the ship received instructions to divert to Mocha, though it’s unclear who issued the order. No injuries or major damage were reported.
The firm is advising ships to avoid sailing east of the Hanish Islands and to keep clear of small boats in the area.
Tensions remain high in the region. Since October 2023, Yemen’s Houthi movement, aligned with Iran, has targeted vessels in the Red Sea, claiming support for Palestinians amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Israel has responded with strikes against Houthi positions.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack.
