Lineage Logistics upgrades Charleston reefer capabilities

The world’s largest refrigerated warehousing company, Lineage Logistics has invested US$34 million to expand its reefer facility in Charleston County, enhancing the cold storage capabilities of the South Carolina Ports.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The facility, which is located at Palmetto Commerce Parkway in North Charleston, is now is 29,390m², which has seen more than 18,000 pallet positions added to the building, bringing the facility’s total to nearly 38,000.

The expansion, which is expected to service export and import customers, as well as domestic shipping partners, supports the growth of customers within Lineage’s growing network of more than 5,000 customers, including Fortune 500 big-box retailers, grocery stores and family-owned businesses, said SC Ports in its announcement.

Micah Mallace, SC Ports senior vice president of marketing and sales, commented, “This significant expansion provides additional refrigerated and frozen storage capacity, as well as enhanced capabilities to handle the rising imports of fresh produce, fruits and other refrigerated goods coming in to serve the growing Southeast consumer market.”

The upgraded facility of Lineage, which moves more than 30% of the temperature-controlled food products across the US and nearly 10% of temperature-controlled food products globally, came after the SC Ports’ recent expansion of the reefer container service area at Wando Welch Terminal, while the SC port authority has also built a new reefer box service area at the upcoming Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal.

Since 2011, SC Ports’ refrigerated cargo business has more than doubled with 110% growth for loaded containers, an increase that is driven by the Southeast’s booming population and changes in grocery consumption.
