Latvia’s major port authorities have joined forces on a major digital transformation initiative aimed at streamlining cargo handling and logistics operations across the country. The project was officially launched during a Steering Committee meeting held at the Freeport of Ventspils.
The initiative, titled “Digital transformation of port management, improving the processing and analysis of transport and logistics data”, brings together key players in Latvia’s maritime and logistics sectors to create a unified digital platform. The goal is to improve data sharing and process efficiency across sea, rail, and road freight operations.
Latvian ports handle around 40 million tonnes of cargo annually, involving a complex network of shippers, stevedores, customs authorities, and other stakeholders. Currently, the process generates large volumes of documents and data, much of which are handled through disconnected systems.
By introducing a central digital platform, the project aims to digitize document flows, automate port procedures, and enable real-time data exchange with national systems. The platform will provide uniform access for both domestic and international users and is expected to significantly reduce administrative burdens, speed up cargo movements, and cut the environmental footprint of logistics operations.
The project partners include the Freeport of Riga Authority, Freeport of Ventspils Authority, Liepaja SEZ Authority, Latvian Maritime Administration, Latvian Railways and its subsidiary LDz Cargo, as well as state agencies like the Customs Administration and Border Guard.
Funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, the project carries a budget of €3.24 million and is scheduled for completion by May 2026. Maintenance and further development of the platform will be managed by the ports themselves.
