Kongsberg Discovery rolls out passive acoustic tech

Kongsberg Discovery is expanding the use of advanced passive acoustic technology worldwide, aiming to improve safety, efficiency, and environmental monitoring in offshore industries. The move follows the full integration of Naxys Technologies, the Bergen-based specialist acquired earlier this year.

The technology acts as “ears in the ocean,” providing continuous acoustic monitoring of subsea structures and equipment. It can detect changes in flow, potential leaks, structural issues, and other anomalies far earlier than traditional systems.

“These solutions can transform awareness of what’s happening below the waves,” said Martin Wien Fjell, President of Kongsberg Discovery. “They help customers act quickly, reduce downtime, cut costs, and protect fragile ecosystems.”

Naxys, founded in 1999, built its reputation in Norway’s energy sector. Its hydrophone-based systems are already used to track offshore operations, minimise environmental impact, and boost efficiency. With Kongsberg’s global reach, the technology is now being introduced to markets including oil, gas, naval, marine research, and port security.

Also, the applications are wide-ranging. Sensors can be permanently installed on subsea structures for leak detection or placed on pumps and compressors to monitor performance. Configured as mobile arrays, they can be deployed on ROVs for inspections, surveillance, or harbour protection. They can also track noise footprints and monitor marine mammals in busy waters.

Lastly, Kongsberg Discovery will continue to expand its Bergen base to serve oceanographic, marine, and energy customers across the region.
