Konecranes to provide intermodal terminal in Chicago with new hybrid RTG

The US logistics company Norfolk Southern Corporation (NSC) has ordered one Konecranes hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane for its Landers Intermodal Yard in Chicago.

The new hybrid RTG, which is operated with electrical power from both the battery and diesel generator, is expected to be delivered to the terminal in December 2022.

During normal use, power is drawn exclusively from the battery, and during peak use, power is drawn from the battery and diesel generator in parallel. The energy to recharge the battery is produced by braking, according to the port equipment manufacturing company.

Furthermore, the hybrid RTG is on a pre-programmed path, driven by Konecranes auto-steering smart feature, easing the work of the operator. It can also stack containers one over three.
