In the third quarter of 2024, CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal ordered five hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes to enhance its container handling operations at Taiwan’s major port.
The cranes, set for delivery in mid-2025, will feature the most advanced set of container-handling Smart Features ever implemented in the country. Konecranes’ hybrid RTGs operate primarily on battery power, utilizing energy captured from braking to extend electric operation. A small diesel generator recharges the battery, reducing fuel consumption and emissions for more efficient and environmentally friendly performance.
Additionally, each crane is equipped with an ergonomic cabin and four Smart Features designed to boost efficiency and ease operator fatigue. Auto-steering keeps the crane on a straight path using virtual rails while Auto-Positioning precisely places the spreader over the correct container slot.
Moreover, Stack Collision Prevention uses laser scanners to monitor the container stack, slowing the trolley if the spreader approaches a target container.
Furthermore, Auto-TOS (Terminal Operating System) Reporting tracks each crane’s movements, maps container positions and integrates seamlessly with the TOS.
“CMA CGM uses Konecranes container handling equipment all over the world. This new order will ensure a long and productive future for their container handling operations in Taiwan, and it underlines the strength of our relationship and their confidence in our technology. Our modern container handing technology continues to generate interest wherever it is implemented,” stated Jerry Fann, Sales Director of Port Solutions at Konecranes.
