Konecranes has won an order for four advanced cranes to support construction of TerraPower’s Natrium® nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
The order, received in 2025, will see the cranes supplied to Bechtel, TerraPower’s engineering, procurement and construction partner. The equipment will support operations across the nuclear island, energy island and an on-site fabrication facility. An earlier 2024 contract brings the total number of cranes supplied by Konecranes for the project to five.
Each crane will serve a specific role. A 125-ton maintenance crane will support component fabrication inside the Reactor Fabrication Building. Two nuclear-rated cranes, each with a 150-ton main lift, will handle fuel movements and reactor assembly. A separate 100-ton bridge crane will support turbine installation and maintenance.
Konecranes will build all units to strict quality and safety standards. The nuclear-rated cranes include seismic restraints, radiation-resistant components and redundant lifting systems to prevent dropped loads.
“This order highlights the trust Bechtel places in our nuclear expertise and precision,” said Andrew Grooms, Regional Sales Manager for Nuclear Equipment & Service at Konecranes. “We continue to strengthen our position as a global leader in nuclear material handling.”
Bechtel also highlighted the milestone. “This is another step forward for the Natrium project,” said Project Director Suchit Chopra. “Supplier support like this helps us deliver on our nuclear power commitments for Wyoming.”
