KMTC Line moves into East African market

South Korean feeder operator Korea Marine Transport Company (KMTC Line) is diversifying into the East African trades.

From 3 June, KMTC Line will begin purchasing slots on the Mombasa-Far East Express (MFX) service operated by Evergreen Marine Corporation, X-Press Feeders, OOCL and CMA CGM. The South Korean intra-Asia specialist will start loading on the 5,600TEU Ital Unica, which is one of seven vessels assigned to MFX.

The MFX loop is Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shekou, Singapore, Port Klang (Westport), Colombo and Mombasa.

A KMTC official said, “There’s growing demand to transport cargoes from China to Mombasa because China has many investments in Africa. We will consider chartering a ship before deciding whether to deploy our own vessel.”
