The green hydrogen production and refuelling station at the Port of Klaipėda is advancing through its testing phase, with operations expected to commence by mid-2025.
Construction and equipment installation are now largely complete, marking a significant transition in the project’s development timeline.
Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, described the current stage as critical, noting that the initiative carries implications well beyond port operations. According to Latakas, the project represents a foundational step in establishing a clean hydrogen fuel economy across Lithuania.
With all equipment in place, formal testing is set to begin shortly, followed by a commissioning phase in spring.
The station will deploy a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser to produce clean fuel, with an annual output capacity of approximately 127 tonnes of hydrogen. Part of that output will supply Lithuania’s first green hydrogen-powered vessel, which is itself nearing completion.
The project is financed under the Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan, known as Next Generation Lithuania, with backing from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU facility.
Total project costs are estimated at approximately EUR€12 million, of which around EUR€6 million is covered by EU funding.
