Klaipėda Port Authority has signed an agreement with Jurbarkas District Municipality to operate one of the quays at Jurbarkas, paving the way for the development of a modern inland cargo port. The Nemunas River, a key transport artery in Lithuania, offers an environmentally friendly route for cargo transportation.
“Developing Jurbarkas Port will strengthen Lithuania’s logistics system and create new opportunities for large-scale cargo transport via inland waterways,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. “We envision Jurbarkas as a modern and sustainable inland waterway cargo hub.”
The quay will support grain transportation and storage, building on an earlier investment project prepared for the port. Klaipėda Port Authority plans to invest several million euros over the coming years, with at least €1 million allocated in the first three years to set up infrastructure and cargo handling facilities.
Jurbarkas, located in western Lithuania along the Nemunas River, has a long tradition of river transport and a strategic position connecting inland waterways to the national logistics network. The project aims to strengthen sustainable cargo transport in the region while expanding Lithuania’s inland waterway capabilities.
