Klaipėda Port launches southern development

Klaipėda Port has begun its biggest project yet, the development of its southern area. Designers are now working on engineering plans for 100 hectares. The aim is to get a construction permit by year’s end.

Firstly, the port has invited local and international terminal operators, industrial developers, and investors to express interest in the project.

“This is a major step for Klaipėda and for Lithuania,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. “It means more jobs, more revenue, and more attention from investors. The design stage is complex. We have to assess the situation, find solutions, and align many interests. We are ready.”

Plans include an entrance channel at least 200 meters wide, a vessel turning circle, and a 1,300-meter quay. A new underground power line will be installed. Designers must also address work near the gas pipeline and prepare ducts for utilities, including shore power.

Also, the port is also setting the commercial framework. A public-private partnership model is proposed to attract major players.

Additionally, Klaipėda has little room left for growth. The southern expansion will create space for new terminals and the largest ships in the world. Moreover, it is expected to bring in foreign investment.

Recreational boaters will benefit too. A marina for up to 500 boats is in the plans.

Lastly, the design is being prepared by Aplan with subcontractor HaskoningDHV Nederland B.V.
