Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi Group has signed a 50-year land lease agreement with Witthal Gulf Industries for the establishment of the country’s first lithium battery recycling facility in Taweelah.
With an investment of AED 40 million, the state-of-the-art plant will play a pivotal role in advancing the UAE’s circular economy and Net Zero by 2050 goals.
The facility will employ cutting-edge technologies to recycle end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles, solar farms, and renewable energy systems, recovering valuable materials such as black mass, copper, and aluminum, and producing sustainable alternatives for industrial use.
Abdullah Al Hameli, CEO of Economic Cities and Free Zones, AD Ports Group stated that this partnership lays the groundwork for innovative solutions to industrial waste and aligns with the UAE’s net-zero ambitions.
HE Jamal Abdulla Mohammad Bin Abdulwahab Alsuwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Singapore, added that this agreement is a testament to the deepening partnership between the UAE and Singapore in sustainable development and also that reflects a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation under the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy.
The recycling facility will not only minimize environmental impact by reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, but also promote the efficient reuse of critical resources, supporting the creation of a robust and sustainable industrial infrastructure within KEZAD.
