Kalmar has unveiled its next-generation lithium-ion battery solution for the Kalmar electric straddle carrier. The new Gen 2 battery offers higher energy capacity, improved thermal stability, and extended operating times, and is now available worldwide.

The Gen 2 battery is designed to meet growing customer demand for safer, more efficient, and sustainable cargo-handling solutions. Its advanced cell chemistry extends battery lifespan, reducing replacement costs and lowering the total cost of ownership while improving lifecycle sustainability.

With a nominal capacity of 533 kWh—25% higher than the previous generation—and a usable capacity of 453 kWh, the battery extends operating times. Straddle carriers equipped with the Gen 2 battery can achieve up to 10 hours of net operation, depending on energy use. Flexible charging strategies, including depot charging during breaks and hands-free opportunity charging, enable continuous “hot-seat” operations.

Kalmar has also deployed its megawatt charging system (MCS) at its Tampere, Finland, test facility to support the new battery.

Marko Hopeaharju, Head of Horizontal Transportation Solutions at Kalmar, said: “Gen 2 represents a major step forward in battery capacity, safety, and lifespan. With longer operating times and improved reliability, our customers can transition to fully electric fleets without compromising performance.”
