“K” LINE has officially taken delivery of its latest liquefied natural gas LNG-fueled car carrier, TETHYS HIGHWAY, a 6,900-vehicle capacity vessel.
A naming ceremony was held on the day of delivery, where the vessel was christened TETHYS HIGHWAY by Mr. Tsuguo Fukumura, Senior Executive Officer of Isuzu Motors Limited. The name pays tribute to Tethys, the Greek sea goddess, symbolizing the vessel’s maritime mission and environmental consciousness.
The vessel operates primarily on LNG fuel, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.
Compared to traditional heavy fuel oil-powered ships, the TETHYS HIGHWAY is expected to emit 25% to 30% less carbon dioxide and nearly eliminate sulfur oxide emissions, a major contributor to air pollution.
This delivery marks another milestone in “K” LINE’s long-term sustainability strategy outlined in its Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future.
The company has set an ambitious target of improving CO₂ emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels surpassing the International Maritime Organization’s goal of a 40% improvement.
Looking ahead to 2050, “K” LINE has committed to the ultimate challenge of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.
As part of its decarbonization roadmap, “K” LINE continues to invest in low-impact fuel technologies and high-efficiency vessel designs to meet and exceed its environmental targets.
