“K” LINE begins long-term use of bio-LNG fuel for car carriers

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE) has announced the start of long-term use of carbon-neutral bio-LNG fuel for its LNG-fueled car carriers.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE) has announced the start of long-term use of carbon-neutral bio-LNG fuel for its LNG-fueled car carriers, following the signing of a procurement agreement for liquefied bio methane (LBM).

The company expects the initiative to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 60,800 tonnes per year.

Bio-LNG is produced from organic waste such as livestock manure and food residues and offers significantly lower lifecycle emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. It can also be used directly in existing LNG-powered vessels without modification, making it a practical solution for immediate emissions reduction.

The fuel used by “K” LINE is ISCC-EU certified, ensuring compliance with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive and confirming its sustainability credentials.

The company said the adoption of bio-LNG will support the decarbonization of supply chains in collaboration with cargo owners and other stakeholders.

The move forms part of “K” LINE’s broader environmental strategy under its “Environmental Vision 2050,” which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“K” LINE added that it will continue to expand the use of alternative and zero-emission fuels as part of its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport.
