The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) congratulates Aqaba Container Terminal in Jordan for being certified through the EcoPorts’ environmental management standard (PERS).
Aqaba joined the EcoPorts’ network in 2013 and is PERS-certified for the third time, demonstrating the efforts of the Jordan port in protecting the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea marine ecosystems.
Isabelle Ryckbost, ESPO secretary general, commented, “I would like to congratulate the Jordan port of Aqaba with this certification. It is very encouraging to see that through Ecoports, we can strengthen the ties with ports in EU neighbouring countries.”
Valter SelĂ©n, ESPO senior policy advisor and EcoPorts Coordinator, said, “Congratulations to Aqaba Container Terminal for their recertification with the EcoPorts Port Environmental Review Standard (PERS). As an important gateway in the Levant region, we are very pleased to see Aqaba strengthening their commitment to continuous self-improvement of environmental management. Aqaba is a good example of how different ports and terminals can work with environmental issues, which is underscored by the recent PERS-recertification.”
According to Aqaba, PERS (Port Environmental Review System) is the only port-specific environmental standard. The last five years have seen important increases in its recognition and membership, with 104 ports from 24 countries currently counting themselves as part of the EcoPorts Network, and 29 ports holding PERS certification.
