The ABS Board of Directors has elected John McDonald as the next Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. He will succeed Christopher J. Wiernicki, who will retire after leading the organization for more than a decade.
McDonald currently serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS. His appointment follows a planned succession process approved by the board on November 11.
“I am honored to lead this remarkable organization,” McDonald said. “Building on a 160-year legacy of technical excellence and commitment to safety, I look forward to advancing our mission and continuing our journey of growth, innovation, and impact.”
McDonald joined ABS in 1996 as a surveyor and has held leadership positions across multiple regions, including Europe and the Pacific. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Western Hemisphere Survey Operations and Senior Vice President of Global Business Development before becoming COO and President.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering from Maine Maritime Academy and an MBA from Texas A&M University.
