Japan’s export decline poses a challenge amid competition with China

Port of Yokohama in Japan

Fourth consecutive monthly export drop reveals structural shift as Beijing’s systematic maritime dominance strategy threatens Japan’s sea trade competitiveness.

For the fourth consecutive month, Japanese exports fell, declining 0.1% year-on-year in August, with shipments to the United States plummeting 13.8% in the steepest drop in over four years.

The immediate pain is visible in Japan’s automotive sector, the backbone of its export economy. Auto shipments to America declined 28.3% in value year-on-year, as Japanese automakers slash prices to preserve market share against Trump administration tariffs, cutting into profit margins and their ability to maintain wage growth.
