Italy’s main reefer container port leverages technology to reduce rehandling moves

A provider of cloud-based supply chain execution and visibility technology solutions Kaleris has announced the successful implementation of the Navis N4 Expert Decking solution to manage and optimise yard planning at the Terminal Darsena Toscana (TDT).

Livorno port’s terminal was able to accomplish a lot of goals using N4 Expert Decking as part of its new yard planning strategy such as employing smart technology to automate decking decisions for import, export, reefer, and empty container, minimising intervention and reactive actions required by yard planners. Furthermore, the concept of wide allocations resulted in nearly zero fail-to-deck containers.

Also, yard planners can now manage the yard proactively because they no longer have to spend time controlling micro-allocation and fail-to-decks. Within two months of going online, there was a 25% reduction in rehandles.

Using N4 Expert Decking, better congestion management resulted in a one-point increase in quay crane productivity. Additionally, minimising the amount of time external vehicles spend in the yard resulted in more efficient and speedier delivery for TDT’s inland customers.

TDT released Expert Decking as part of its new approach for addressing yard planning difficulties after recently experiencing an important volume increase that resulted in severe yard utilisation.

TDT has an annual operational capacity of 900,000 TEUs and is the largest Italian port for refrigerated cargo, while it is located near Livorno, the centre of Italy’s northwestern coast.

With accessible road and rail connections, the terminal serves central and northeastern Italy and acts as a crucial access point for larger European markets. It also contributes significantly to exports to the United States, South America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

“The post-pandemic period created numerous yard occupancy and congestion challenges for us,” stated Giuseppe Caleo, commercial director and P.M. at TDT.
