Is trade war inevitable after US election result?

Much has been made of Donald Trump’s rhetoric ahead of last week’s election win, with the threat of major import duties to be levied on all goods into the United States from Asia and Europe, with a particular emphasis on Chinese freight.

As a result of Trump’s election promises, many analysts expect a rapid increase in tariffs after the presidential handover on 20 January, with the first import duties levied around 29 January. And that is expected to spark an equally rapid rise in demand as shippers seek to beat the new tariff regime.
