IRS-classed tanker MT Elgon ready for Lake Victoria operations

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a premier international classification society, announces the successful delivery of the Double Hull Oil Tanker ‘MT ELGON’ on 16 August 2024.

Constructed by Mahathi Shipyard Uganda and adhering to IRS’s rigorous classification standards, this vessel is set to operate on Lake Victoria, catering to Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

The ‘MT ELGON’ boasts a modern design with a double-hull steel construction and a conventional twin-screw propulsion system, enabling speeds of up to 10 knots. It features dedicated machinery and pump room spaces for peak operational performance and will be staffed by a crew of 18.

Designed by a Dubai-based company and built by skilled Indian workers and officers in Bugiri Bukkasa, Uganda, this project highlights a notable achievement in international collaboration and engineering excellence.

During the delivery ceremony, president Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa of Uganda lauded the Indian Register of Shipping for their exceptional support and service.

He emphasized the crucial role of the IRS in the successful construction and delivery of the vessel and highlighted the positive impact of international partnerships on enhancing Uganda’s maritime capabilities.

“The delivery of ‘MT ELGON’ underlines our commitment to excellence in ship classification and maritime safety. This project, achieved through the combined efforts of international expertise and local craftsmanship, stands as a testament to the high standards that IRS upholds. We are honoured by President Museveni’s recognition of our work, and we look forward to continuing our support in advancing Uganda’s maritime infrastructure,” stated Saikat Roychowdhury – Operations in Charge, IRS.
