Iranian container shipping shows defiance amid 2025 sanctions surge

Despite facing the most intensive sanctions regime since 2018, Iran’s container shipping industry has demonstrated surprising resilience in 2025.

The figures, released by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization, paint a picture of defiance against mounting US pressure.

However, beneath the headline numbers lies a complex story of adaptation, risk, and growing vulnerabilities in Iran’s maritime operations, with ports handling a record 234.8 million tons of goods and container traffic reaching 3.08 TEUs, a 13% increase from the previous year.

Iran’s shipping strategy has evolved significantly to counter sanctions pressure. While the Port of Shahid Rajaee in Bandar Abbas continues to handle 85-90% of national container volume, the real success story is emerging at Chabahar Port.
