Intra-Asia container rates edge lower in early January

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) fell 2% in the first week of January. The index now stands at $700 per 40ft container.

The IACI tracks a weighted average of spot rates across 18 major intra-Asia trade lanes. Rates are now 15% lower year on year.

Despite the recent dip, Drewry expects a modest rebound in the coming weeks. Tight vessel capacity and an extended peak season are likely to support rates.

Spot rate movements were mixed across key routes. Rates from Busan to Shanghai slipped 5% to $61 per FEU. Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai dropped sharply, down 19% to $54 per FEU. Jakarta to Shanghai remained unchanged at $51 per FEU.

On outbound routes from China, Shanghai to Jawaharlal Nehru Port rose 5% to $1,190 per FEU. Shanghai to Singapore stayed flat at $762 per FEU. Shanghai to Tanjung Pelepas increased 7% to $1,120 per FEU. Shanghai to Yokohama edged up 3% to $765 per FEU.

Rates from Yokohama to Shanghai jumped significantly. They rose 93% to $77 per FEU.
