Indian Register of Shipping launched its first defence export project with a floating dry dock for the Sri Lanka Navy. The milestone marks IRS’s expansion into international defence work.
Goa Shipyard Limited is constructing the floating dry dock. The launch ceremony took place on February 19, 2026, at GSL. Rear Admiral MDK Wijewardana of the Sri Lanka Navy attended as chief guest.
The floating dry dock will enhance the Sri Lanka Navy’s in-country ship repair and maintenance capabilities. The facility will support underwater repair and maintenance of a large range of naval vessels. The dock aims to improve operational readiness and self-reliance.
IRS provided classification services and technical oversight for the project. The work followed IRS Rules and standards.
Commander KK Dhawan, Head of Defence at IRS, called the launch a historic milestone. “It reflects the trust placed in Indian shipbuilding and classification capabilities,” he said. The project demonstrates commitment to supporting friendly foreign navies with robust technical standards.
The project underscores India’s growing role as a maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region. It aligns with efforts to promote indigenous shipbuilding, enhance defence exports, and advance India’s position as a global maritime hub.
The successful launch demonstrates the partnership between IRS, Goa Shipyard Limited, and the Sri Lanka Navy.
