The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) seems to play an increasingly significant role in enhancing India’s defence capabilities.
By supporting key new construction projects for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, the IRS is making a substantial contribution toward achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing, as envisioned under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Recently, several critical milestones were achieved in major vessel construction projects classified by IRS. These include:
- Second “Fleet Support Ship” at L&T Shipbuilding.
- First “Next-Generation Missile Vessel” at Cochin Shipyard.
- Second “Next Generation Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel” and the first Coast Guard “Fast Patrol Vessels” at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
- Keel laying of the third Cadet Training Ship at L&T.
The simultaneous commencement of production for these advanced naval and Coast Guard platforms, including the highly complex Next Generation Missile Vessels and Fleet Support Ships, across multiple shipyards, presents a unique challenge. It will thoroughly test IRS’ technical expertise and operational capacity, reaffirming its commitment to supporting India’s maritime defence aspirations.
Commenting on the occasion, Cdr. K K Dhawan (Retd), Head of Defence at IRS, explained: “This milestone signifies India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence manufacturing and IRS is honored to play a pivotal role in ensuring these vessels meet the highest standards of safety and performance. IRS will take all required steps to ensure timely delivery of classification services and adherence to quality benchmarks.”
