The Indian Ocean has emerged as a strategic theater of competition between two Asian giants: India and China.
India’s recent developments indicate a rapid expansion of its maritime and logistics infrastructure. Under the Modi government’s proactive policies, cargo traffic on India’s National Waterways surged from just 18 million metric tons in 2014 to 145.5 MMT in 2025, recording a staggering CAGR of 20.86%.
The number of national waterways grew from 5 to 111, with operational length now covering nearly 4,900 kilometers. This inland focus complements India’s seaborne strategy.
At the heart of India’s oceanic ambitions lies the Vizhinjam International Seaport, recently inaugurated as the country’s first deep-water transshipment and semi-automated port.
