Import and export traffic steady the numbers
Valenciaport recorded a solid performance in June, thanks to growing import and export volumes. Full container exports rose by 5.29%, and imports increased by 2.93% compared to June last year. This helped balance out the 5.46% drop in transhipment traffic.
Transhipments, containers that stop in Valencia en route to other destinations, surged in 2024, growing 17%. But that trend has reversed in 2025. More of the port’s activity now links directly to Spain’s own trade flows.
First half figures confirm the trend
Between January and June 2025, the port moved 2.83 million TEUs, a 3.84% increase year-on-year. Transhipment volumes dipped 1.75%. But imports jumped 4.82%, and exports surged 15.21%, highlighting strong demand for goods entering and leaving Spain.
In June alone, Valenciaport handled 487,833 TEUs, a slight 0.08% increase compared to the same month in 2024. While modest, the uptick shows that direct trade is making up for the drop in transit cargo.
China leads the way
China remains Valenciaport’s top trading partner, with 386,562 TEUs moved so far this year. The United States follows with 195,534 TEUs, then Algeria (160,993), Turkey (127,292), and India (81,795).
On a full-year basis, the port moved 5.58 million TEUs, marking an 8.33% increase from the previous 12 months.
Rail traffic picks up speed
Rail freight saw strong growth in the first half of the year. The port handled 123,933 containers by train, a 5.93% rise. That translates to nearly 1.64 million tonnes, up 7.78% from the same period in 2024. Valenciaport continues to push rail as a greener, more efficient transport option inland.
Ro-Ro volumes continue to grow
Roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo is also on the rise. From January to June, the port processed 269,637 intermodal transport units (ITUs), a 7.78% increase. Ro-Ro plays a key role in connecting Valencia with Italy, the Balearic Islands, and the wider Mediterranean region.
Passenger numbers rise despite cruise dip
Passenger traffic climbed in June. A total of 184,515 travellers passed through the port, up 4.88% compared to June last year.
Over the past 12 months, 1.62 million passengers used the port. Regular ferry passengers rose 3.85% to 836,413. However, cruise passengers dropped 3.99% to 780,469, showing a small dip in the cruise segment.
