IMO advances port digitalization in Dar es Salaam

A needs assessment mission led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is evaluating the Port of Dar es Salaam to prepare for a Maritime Single Window (MSW) system.

The MSW is a one-stop digital platform that streamlines communication among all stakeholders involved in ship arrivals, stays, and departures. By consolidating data exchange, it aims to cut time and costs for port procedures.

Since 1 January 2024, all IMO Member States are required to establish MSW systems to improve global shipping efficiency.

The mission (23–27 March 2026) is conducted by IMO consultants with the Ministry of Transport, the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), other public agencies—including the Tanzania Revenue Authority, Port Health Service, Border Police, and Immigration Service—and private stakeholders such as shipping lines, agents, and terminal operators. It will conclude with a meeting with TASAC to review and validate findings.

The mission report will provide recommendations for developing the MSW, following IMO principles. It will include stakeholder mapping and IT tool guidance to ensure effective implementation.

This initiative is part of IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP), delivered in close partnership with the Ministry of Transport and TASAC.
