Imabari delivers 209,000 DWT LNG-Ready bulk carrier SG LAGOON

SG LAGOON

Imabari Shipbuilding delivered SG LAGOON, a 209,000 DWT Capesize bulk carrier, built at Saijo Shipyard. The vessel is designed to carry high-density cargo such as iron ore while maintaining high transport efficiency and advanced environmental performance.

Hull and Cargo Features

SG LAGOON is built under the Common Structural Regulations (CSR BC&OT) and can operate using either heavy oil or LNG. By placing LNG fuel tanks on the upper deck at the stern side of the residential area, the vessel retains the same cargo capacity as conventional heavy-oil tankers. Each cargo hold is equipped with a top-side tank and a hopper tank and allows separation of high specific-gravity cargo (3.0 t/m³), optimizing flexibility for iron ore transport.

Environmental Performance

SG LAGOON meets Phase 3 CO₂ reduction requirements (≥30% reduction from reference values) even when using heavy oil. Switching to LNG fuel can further reduce CO₂ emissions by 20–30% and cut sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by nearly 100%. The main engine features a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to comply with Tier III NOx regulations. Generators and auxiliary boilers operate on dual-fuel specifications, enabling the use of LNG Boil-Off Gas (BOG) without waste.

Additional energy-saving features include:

  • Energy-efficient additives in fuel

  • Twisting rudder design

  • Optimized bow shape to reduce propulsion resistance

  • Residential area streamlined to reduce wind drag

  • Hull paint minimizing friction with seawater
